Another Serious Gap in My Children’s Education…
I recently bought a bag of nuts for the Holidays. Actually, I bought them to use for decoration more than to eat, but I did go ahead and get a nutcracker in case my kids wanted to shell a few pecans. Imagine my surprise when I realized that neither one of my children could recognize a pecan in the shell. Or a walnut, or Brazil nut, or even an almond for that matter. They did recognize a chestnut, but only because we’d seen a show on the Food Network about them.
Is this normal? Have I fallen down on the job here? Do your kids/siblings/etc…know their nuts?Â
These are things I need to know. ![]()

Heck, I couldn’t recognize a nut in its shell.
And, Jen, I wouldn’t toss too many nutshells Rhonda’s way, KWIM?

When I was a kid, my mom always bought the big bags of mixed nuts in the shell and set them out with a nutcracker at Christmastime. I can recognize all of them, but I’m not sure many people do this anymore.

Yeah, not too many adults much less kids would. So much is lacking with our kids today and prior to that. Last year, a student worker here had no idea what a typewriter looked like much less how to turn it on or use it……

I’m not sure I could recognize some of those! Pecans and walnuts, yes. Pistachios too. I’m not sure about almonds or Brazil nuts. Chestnuts, yes.

Yes, Jen that was funny. I freely admit to my nuttiness. (I wonder if that’s a word?)
Kimberly, say it isn’t so!
Andrea, we’re going to start doing it. Messy, but worth it, IMO.
Ginger, that’s just sad.
Lynn, I’ll have to post a picture.

This is something we used to do at my house as well. Thank you for reminding me that I need to do this for my family this year. I haven’t up till now because the girls were too small but Baby Girl is plenty old enough to know not to eat the shell now

Kira, yes but are your dogs? I caught my fur-baby chewing on an almond, shell and all.

Mine probalby does not know the difference. I need to buy some and teach him.
