So I’m looking at my checking account yesterday and am pleasantly surprised at the extra cash I find in there.  Wow, I think.  I’m much better at this budgeting thing that I thought I was.  I’ve got all this money left over.  What should I buy?  What should I do?  I called my husband to preen and brag.

“I’ve got lots of extra money in my checking account.”

“Good.  Pay more bills.”

“Nope.  I’m going to splurge.

“Why do you have extra money in your checking account?” he wants to know.  “We just finished Christmas and a big vacation.  You shouldn’t have any extra money in your checking account.”

Dammit. he’s right.  I shouldn’t.

“Have you paid all your bills?”

“Of course!” I shoot back, annoyed.

He starts ticking them off, then gets to one that makes my stomach clench.  “What about your car payment?”

Car payment isn’t due yet, but I suddenly realize that I haven’t paid it.  I paid all the other ones before we left for vacation because I knew they’d come due before we got back.  Everything but the car payment.

“I knew you shouldn’t have any extra money in that account,” he tells me.

Me, in a total state of disgust.  “You’re such a know-it-all.”
